The history of legal expense insurance traces back to the early 1900s and the “24 Heures du Mans” (24 Hours of Le Mans), a gruelling sports car endurance contest still thrilling spectators to this day.
Thrilling, yes, but dangerous too. Over the years, accidents at this famous race track resulted in complicated and long legal disputes against race car drivers and their insurers. These disputes led to the development of a unique insurance product designed specifically to meet these challenges. The first company (named D.A.S. or “Defense Automobile et Sportive”) offering this coverage opened in Le Mans, France in 1917.
The concept spread rapidly and by 1930, legal expense insurance coverage was also available in Belgium, Switzerland and Germany. Later, during the mid to late fifties, the product became more refined due to the increasing number of tourists visiting Europe. This influx of travellers generated an increase in the number of accidents involving two (or more) parties who spoke different languages and accessed different legal systems. This, in turn, created a greater demand for specialized advice and assistance.
Today, legal expense insurance is available for both consumers and business owners, providing coverage for legal advice, contract disputes and employment disputes, legal defence and more.
DAS Group is recognized as the global market leader in legal expense insurance, having specialized in providing this unique coverage for more than 80 years. We at DAS are very proud of our long history and excellent reputation, and are pleased to be able to offer Canadians the security and peace of mind currently enjoyed by legal expense insurance policyholders around the world.
